Russ tests what a 5 W blue diode can do on acrylic and quickly finds that the answer depends heavily on colour, chemistry and the way the material is manufactured. Clear acrylic and dark acrylic behave very differently at 455 nm.

What You’ll Learn
- Why clear acrylic is difficult for a blue diode laser.
- How cast and extruded acrylic can respond differently.
- Why colourants and carbonised material can become the real absorber.

Acrylic Is Not One Material Behaviour
The blue beam often passes through material that does not absorb 455 nm light efficiently. Dark pigments, dyes and surface changes can alter that response dramatically.
Engraving Mechanisms Matter
Russ looks at bubbles, soot, local heating and the polymer response rather than treating every visible mark as direct absorption by the acrylic itself.
Why This Session Matters
It shows why material formulation matters as much as the laser setting when working with acrylic.
