Diode Lasers – Under the Hood 09: Material Test Matrices: Speed, Power and Wood Colour

Russ tackles the familiar material test matrix and asks what the squares are really telling us. Rather than assuming that darker areas are simply ‘more power’, he separates speed, PWM and accumulated energy to explain the pattern.

What You’ll Learn

  • How to interpret a speed/power material test matrix.
  • Why apparent colour change can come from exposure rather than a new shade of burn.
  • How line density and carbonisation affect what the eye sees.

What the Matrix Actually Changes

A typical matrix changes two variables at once. Russ shows why that can make it easy to attribute a result to the wrong parameter, particularly when speed changes exposure time while PWM changes the fraction of each cycle that the diode is on.

From Brown to Charcoal

As more energy is delivered, the surface moves from a light mark toward deeper carbonisation. The visible shade therefore reflects a combination of depth, carbon formation, line spacing and untouched material between marks.

Why This Session Matters

This is an especially useful cross-over session for understanding material-test matrices on both diode and CO₂ systems.
