With a 40 W diode head installed, Russ encounters a problem that is mechanical rather than optical: the heavier head changes the dynamics of the machine. Patterns initially blamed on the laser can instead be created by belts, acceleration and carriage movement.

What You’ll Learn
- Why a heavy diode head can expose weaknesses in a lightweight motion system.
- How acceleration and belt behaviour can create visible engraving artefacts.
- Why machine dynamics must be separated from laser-output problems.

The Laser Is Not Always the Culprit
Repeating marks and instability in an engraving can look like PWM or optical problems. Russ shows that the moving mass of a 40 W module can excite the gantry and belts, creating its own pattern.
Detuning for Stability
Reducing acceleration and adjusting the mechanics allows the head to move more steadily. Before diagnosing the beam, the machine must be physically capable of carrying the module cleanly.
Why This Session Matters
It adds motion-system dynamics to the diagnostic framework developed through the series.
