Session 00 – Introduction

The Concise RDWorks Learning Lab Series

Session 00 introduces the Concise RDWorks Learning Lab and explains why Russ Sadler created this shorter, more structured series for people learning to use Chinese CO₂ laser machines.

This introduction sets out the purpose of the series: not to provide a step-by-step operating manual, but to build a practical understanding of the machine, its components and the principles behind how they work.

What This Series Is Designed to Do

Russ describes the series as the result of several years spent experimenting with, repairing, modifying and trying to understand Chinese laser machines. Rather than repeating that learning journey in full, these sessions organise the main ideas into a more logical sequence for a newcomer.

The emphasis is on understanding the technology well enough to make informed decisions, recognise problems and understand why a machine behaves as it does.

Focused on CO₂ Laser Machines

Although Russ has also worked with RF-excited CO₂ and fibre laser systems, this series is primarily concerned with the type of glass-tube CO₂ laser cutter and engraver commonly associated with Chinese-manufactured machines.

Later sessions break the machine down into subjects such as the laser beam, tube, power supply, controller, motion system, optics, cooling, extraction, focusing and processing behaviour.

Understanding Rather Than Memorising

A recurring theme is that the series is not intended to tell every viewer exactly which buttons to press. Machine configurations differ, and software and hardware evolve. The more transferable skill is understanding the principles well enough to interpret your own machine.

Russ’s “bricks, doors and windows” analogy captures this approach: the series supplies the building blocks, while the user applies them to their own system.

Why This Matters to a Laser User

  • Chinese CO₂ laser machines can vary significantly in build quality and configuration;
  • understanding the underlying systems makes troubleshooting and modification easier;
  • principles learned on one machine often transfer to other machines using similar architecture;
  • and the later sessions are designed to build on one another rather than stand as isolated tips.

Key takeaway: this series is intended to give you a working mental model of a CO₂ laser machine so that later settings, adjustments and faults make more sense.

The concise RDWorks Learning Lab series with Russ Sadler.

2
00:00:12,320 –> 00:00:19,280
Introduction. As you can see I’m old, I’m grey, I’m fat, I’m ugly.

3
00:00:19,280 –> 00:00:27,440
Those are just some of the gifts that God has given me. I’m also a retired engineer if engineers ever retire.

4
00:00:27,440 –> 00:00:32,690
But when I started my retirement, I also started playing with these Chinese laser machines.

5
00:00:32,690 –> 00:00:37,930
Now, here I am on vacation beside the river and.

6
00:00:37,930 –> 00:00:42,190
I’ve left my laser machines back in my workshop.

7
00:00:42,190 –> 00:00:48,340
I thought now would be a good time to sit down and do something I’ve been promising to do for years.

8
00:00:48,340 –> 00:00:57,370
It was never my intention to set up a business. I only ever wanted to play with these machines and try and understand the technology.

9
00:00:57,370 –> 00:01:08,830
I found out very quickly that there was a lot of black magic, myth’s, blatant untruths and a huge amount of misunderstanding about this technology.

10
00:01:08,830 –> 00:01:16,150
So I decided to set forth the whole series of videos to try and document my learning journey.

11
00:01:16,150 –> 00:01:25,450
And I always promised myself one day I would sit down and try and condense all of my learning into a series of very

12
00:01:25,450 –> 00:01:33,820
short videos that would enable newcomers to quickly grab hold of all the things that’s taken me six years to learn,

13
00:01:33,820 –> 00:01:39,520
although I’ve acquired skills in different types of laser machine, for instance,

14
00:01:39,520 –> 00:01:46,180
an RF laser radio frequency controlled laser machine and also fiber laser machines.

15
00:01:46,180 –> 00:01:52,270
We’re going to limit these learning sessions to the CO2 Chinese laser machine.

16
00:01:52,270 –> 00:01:58,570
Now, there is no intention in these sessions to tell you how to run your machine.

17
00:01:58,570 –> 00:02:02,440
This is not a manual for using a machine. What this is,

18
00:02:02,440 –> 00:02:11,980
it’s a series of sessions which will break down the machine so that you can understand the various parts of the technology and how they work.

19
00:02:11,980 –> 00:02:17,560
Now, these are essential building blocks that I didn’t have when I started. I’ve had to acquire them little by little.

20
00:02:17,560 –> 00:02:24,520
So what I’m trying to do now is to put them into a logical order that will enable you to understand the technology.

21
00:02:24,520 –> 00:02:27,010
Basically, what I’m going to do is I’m going to give you the bricks,

22
00:02:27,010 –> 00:02:31,390
the doors and the windows, and I’m going to tell you go forth and build your own house.

23
00:02:31,390 –> 00:02:39,978
So let’s make a start with session one.
