This session develops the optical side of the investigation. Russ uses lenses, sunlight and practical demonstrations to explore how focusing really behaves and why a nominal focal point does not tell the whole story for laser processing.

What You’ll Learn
- Why lens behaviour is more complicated than a single geometric focal point.
- How beam diameter and energy density change through optical systems.
- Why practical damage tests can reveal more than nominal lens specifications.

From Lens Theory to Real Damage
Russ compares conventional lens diagrams with what happens when light is used to damage a material. The practical emphasis is on where sufficient intensity exists to mark or burn, rather than simply where textbook rays appear to cross.
Beam Expansion and Energy Density
Increasing beam diameter lowers intensity unless the optical system preserves the useful energy distribution. This becomes important later when Russ compares diode and RF optical arrangements.
Why This Session Matters
The series is built around measured and observed behaviour rather than relying only on quoted optical specifications. Later sessions continue to refine these working explanations.
