What Is a Laser Rotary Attachment?

A laser rotary attachment rotates a cylindrical or round object while the laser engraves it. It effectively replaces one linear motion axis with rotational motion so artwork can be wrapped around glasses, bottles, tumblers, tubes and similar objects.

Roller versus chuck rotary

A roller rotary supports the object on driven rollers and relies on friction to turn it. A chuck rotary grips the workpiece mechanically and rotates it around a defined axis. Each arrangement has different strengths depending on shape, weight and surface finish.

Why does diameter matter?

The controller or software must convert commanded travel into rotation. The calibration method depends on the rotary type: a roller rotary is mainly governed by roller diameter and steps per rotation, while a chuck rotary commonly needs the workpiece diameter or circumference as part of the setup. Incorrect calibration stretches or compresses the engraving around the object.

Why is focus more difficult on curved objects?

Only a limited region of a curved surface can remain at the ideal focal distance at one time. Small-diameter objects or artwork that spans a large angle around the object can therefore make focus, alignment and artwork placement more critical.

Common setup problems

  • Slipping on roller systems.
  • Incorrect steps or diameter settings.
  • Object taper causing artwork distortion.
  • Mechanical runout or poor centring.
  • Insufficient Z clearance or incorrect focus.
